How to Treat Sciatica
How to Treat Sciatica
If your throbbing leg pain is due to sciatica find out how to manage your discomfort once and for all.
When we hear the word sciatica we may immediately assume that it’s an actual health condition, when, in fact, it’s just a symptom. This symptom manifests itself to let our Union, KY, chiropractor, Dr. Beau Van Wechel, know that there might be something more that is lurking underneath the surface such as degenerative disc disease or a herniated disc. If you have sciatica then you may be experiencing any of these symptoms:

- Pain that appears around the leg or butt (often on one side, only)
- Pain that is exacerbated by sitting down
- Leg pain that throbs, burns or even tingles
- Pain that may be so bad that it makes it difficult to move around
- Pain that travels from the leg all the way to the foot
Sciatic pain for one person may not be the same for another. Some people may only experience minor bouts of it while others may have this issue all day every day and could be severe enough to affect their quality of life. If you notice any of these symptoms then it’s time to make an appointment with our Union chiropractic doctor.
What can chiropractic treatment do to alleviate my sciatica?
The first thing we will need to do is determine the cause of your sciatica. After all, a pinched nerve may need to be treated differently than degenerative disc disease. By and large the nonsurgical approaches to handling sciatica are pretty clear-cut:
- Take pain relievers, whether over-the-counter or prescription, to help alleviate your pain when it arises
- Use either ice or heat to help reduce swelling or pain. Whether you chose ice or heat is truly up to you and what provides you with the most relief. You should only apply ice/heat for about 20 minutes at a time several times throughout the day.
- Manual manipulation can also be a great source of relief for those suffering from sciatica. Spinal adjustments help to realign the spine into the proper position to address underlying issues that could be responsible for your pain. Through multiple sessions, we can help improve not only the health and function of the spine but also alleviate your discomfort.
- In some cases, we may recommend other treatment options to accompany spinal manipulation such as massage therapy or acupuncture. We will be able to create a more detailed treatment plan for you when you come in for a consultation.
