HERNIATED DISC

Herniated Disc

Diagnosed With A Herniated Disc?

Have you ever experienced back pain that shoots down your leg, causing your everyday activities to become more difficult or even intolerable?

One cause of this extreme back pain is a herniated disc, also known as a slipped disc or a ruptured disc. The structure of your back and spine is made of bones that are cushioned by tiny oval pads of cartilage or discs consisting of a tough outer layer with a soft inner layer.

When a disc between two bones in the spine presses on the nerves around the backbone, it is called a herniated disc. Herniate means to bulge or stick out. Herniated discs are most common in the lumbar spine, which is the lower part of your backbone between the bottom of your ribs and your hips.

What Causes A Herniated Disc?

Disc herniation is most often caused by age-related wear and tear called degeneration of the discs. As you age, your spinal discs lose some of their water content, which makes them less flexible and more prone to tearing or rupturing with even a minor strain or twist.

Often, you may not be able to pinpoint the exact cause of your herniated disc, and sometimes using your back muscles instead of your leg and thigh muscles to lift large, heavy objects can lead to a herniated disc.

Lifting correctly is a good way to avoid suffering from a herniated disc or asking for help when moving heavy objects. Even if you think you can lift it on your own, it doesn't hurt to ask for help.

Why See a Chiropractor for Herniated Disc:

Our chiropractic care offers a non-invasive and drug-free approach to managing herniated discs. Treatments focus on addressing the underlying cause of the issue by restoring proper alignment to the spine and reducing pressure on the affected disc.

Chiropractic adjustments, along with other therapeutic techniques, can help alleviate pain, improve mobility, and prevent the need for surgery in many cases.

Chiropractic Treatment:

Treatment for herniated discs may include spinal adjustments, spinal decompression therapy, soft tissue therapy, and corrective exercises. Spinal adjustments aim to realign the vertebrae and reduce pressure on the affected disc, relieving pain and promoting healing.

Spinal decompression therapy gently stretches the spine, creating negative pressure within the disc to encourage retraction and healing. Soft tissue therapy targets muscle tension and inflammation, promoting relaxation and pain relief.
